SMD uses field emission cold cathodes in many of the products Since 2006, we have been supplying cold cathodes on a commercial basis, primarily to organizations developing their own products requiring a field emission source. Field emission cathodes can be used for many unique applications and as replacements for thermal cathodes in ion sources, microwave power tubes, etc, where they eliminate the cathode heater, shrink product size, improve product lifetimes and provide a well-controlled beam, at a fraction of the cost. we are developing. We believe the cathode should fit the application and have worked with many different emitter materials, including numerous types of carbon, compound semiconductors, silicon, carbides, nitrides and various metals. Our workhorse emitter uses a proprietary form of carbon and is a good all-around choice for high current density, ease of fabrication and long lifetime. These can be produced as tips or as continuous edges, in lateral and vertical orientations. The gated tip emitter shown at right achieved a stable 70 micro-amps, a record for current density, with long lifetime under routine vacuum conditions.
